The 15-Minute AI Setup for Skeptics
Pick one tool, set it up properly, and finish your first three real tasks before your coffee gets cold.
One assistant, configured once, and three small wins are enough to get started.
Step 1: Pick one tool (2 minutes)
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini all have free tiers and all work well for everyday tasks. If you already use Gmail, start with Gemini. If you use Microsoft 365, try Copilot. Otherwise pick whichever name you have heard most. Switching later costs you nothing.
Step 2: Turn off the parts you do not want (3 minutes)
- Open the tool's settings and find the data or privacy section.
- Look for the option that lets your conversations be used to train the model, and turn it off if you prefer.
- Make a habit of using a personal account for personal things and only using work AI tools your employer has approved.
Step 3: Tell it who you are once (5 minutes)
Most tools have "custom instructions" or a "profile" box. Fill it in so you never have to repeat yourself. Paste this and edit the brackets:
I am [job or business] with [X] years of experience in [field]. I am not a beginner at my work, but I am new to AI tools. Explain things plainly, without jargon. Give the answer first, then the steps. When I ask for writing, keep it direct and professional, no hype words. Ask me one question if you need more information.
Step 4: Do three real tasks (5 minutes)
Do not test it with trivia. Use it on something that is actually on your list today.
- Paste a rough email you have been avoiding and ask: "Make this clearer and shorter. Keep my tone."
- Ask: "I have [a meeting, a decision, a project]. What questions should I be asking that I have not thought of?"
- Paste a long document or article and ask: "Summarize this in 5 bullets, then list anything I should verify."
What good looks like
By the end you should have one tool bookmarked, your profile filled in, and three outputs you can judge. Some will be great and some will be mediocre. That is normal, and the next playbook, Prompts That Actually Work, is about closing that gap.
